The witness to successive technology transitions

Adam Johnson

Profile

Adam Johnson is the founder of Rafer Consulting and works as a Fractional Chief Strategic AI Officer. He advises mid-market and enterprise leaders on AI strategy, oversight and organisational readiness, working as a global advisor to executive buyers. His work sits upstream of AI delivery, in strategy and executive alignment.

Adam has more than 25 years of experience across Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Dropbox and Wheels Up. He spent over 12 years at Amazon, including a role in indirect procurement. He also offers Fractional Chief Procurement Officer services, helping organisations map their vendor landscape, centralise contracts, build renewal calendars, remove duplicate or unused subscriptions and negotiate better terms.

He is an Executive Fellow at The Academy for AI Strategy. He has taught AI to executive audiences since 2024 through programs, conference presentations, masterclasses and webinars.

One recurring observation
Trust is not what good systems produce — it is what they require before anything else works.
And one central question
What can the machine not hold — and what does that leave for human judgment?

The series

On Risk Worth Taking

Adam's role in the series is not to claim certainty about what happens next, but to compare this transition with the technology and organisational shifts that came before it:

  • What have organisations seen before?
  • What is actually different this time?
  • Which patterns are repeating?
  • Can trust be designed and measured, or only hoped for?
  • What does readiness actually require before AI can be governed?

His starting point

Trust has components: shared context, visibility, transparency, accountability and alignment.

None of them arrive on their own because the technology did.
